Background

Peak3 is a Queensland-based company focused on the reduction and monitoring of emissions in mines: the primary focus is on nano and ultrafine particulates from diesel engines, however dust and other emissions both in mines and other industrial/above ground settings are secondary targets. The company has developed emissions reduction hardware (Particulate Reduction Technology – PRT) and emissions monitoring software and processes.

The market need for these solutions is driven by both an immediate regulatory requirement and a bottom line economic driver i.e. the need to reduce operating and maintenance costs in mines. Peak3 is targeting installation of their systems on a number of draglines and underground loaders by EOY 2012.

This investment is OneVentures' first in the Clean Technology space presenting an exciting opportunity to support a company that addresses pressing and environmental and health concerns.  OneVentures will work with Peak3 to finalise product development, complete first commercial trials and develop and exploit markets, initially in the mining industry.

Peak3 advances diesel particulate reduction

Brisbane technology developer Peak3 has secured over $2.3m in public and private funding to commercialise its diesel particulate emissions management systems. These are based on acoustic filtration technology for reducing ultra-fine particles and include emissions monitoring systems.

 

Aussie venture capital group OneVentures has committed to $1.5m funding and the Federal Government has awarded Peak3 a Commercialisation Australia Grant of $866,284.

Current technology has a way to go in reducing ultra-fine diesel particulate emissions. Peak3 says its technology can effect reductions of particulates down to the nano level.

Peak3’s technology was developed in collaboration with CSIRO, BHP Billiton Nickel West Leinster and the Australian Coal Research Association Project and verified by the Queensland University of Technology.

The company’s acoustic filtration system uses ultrasonics to cause agglomeration of particulates from as small as 30 nanometres. Peak3 said the technology enables target reductions of particulates and is designed for underground environments.

Peak3 has a monitoring system to complement its filtration capabilities. Its remote emissions monitoring platform has been designed to measure a range of emissions parameters, using multi-collinear processing.

Also under development is an intelligent secondary fuel integration system. Peak3 said it enables the controlled injection of secondary fuels, such as LNG, into large diesel systems to increase thermodynamic efficiency of diesel engines and can ultimately reduce particulate emissions as well.
