Diesel Particulate Research Program

“Barminco plans to develop a diesel particulate management plan.”

The safety of our people surrounding plant and equipment is a priority. As part of this, Barminco is undertaking research into the potential long-term occupational health and safety effects of diesel engine emissions and diesel particulate matter (DPM) on our people.

With the view to creating a long term plan, Barminco’s Environmental Health Safety and Training (EHS&T) Department is currently conducting DPM research to determine the most precise way of monitoring, while exploring the main irritant health effects which could be linked to diesel particulate exposure.

In monitoring diesel particulates the EHS Department is working closely with the Engineering Department headed up by Engineering Manager Peter Campain.

Also part of the team, Sara Fernandez, an EHS graduate majoring in Public Health and Safety, was recently employed by Barminco to conduct diesel particulate monitoring including examination of air quality, personal exposure, overall emissions and possible irritant health effects.

Barminco EHS&T Manager Peter Nicholls and Sara Fernandez, are members of The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME) diesel particulate sub group. The group was recently formed to look at all aspects of diesel particulate emissions and is presently focusing attention on creating a standardised monitoring method.

A further initiative, Barminco has commenced a partnership with Peak 3, an external organisation who has created a product to reduce diesel particulate emissions from vehicles. With Peak 3 on board, Barminco plans to develop a diesel particulate management plan that will be recognised by mining groups world-wide.
